Caldas Novas belonged to the Capitania of São Paulo, while Brazil was a Portugal's colony. In 1722, time of Caldas Novas' thermal waters discovery, the Portuguese government, eager after mineral wealth, kept them for future exploitation. However, the exploitation continued as the years passed by. Bartolomeu Bueno Filho, son of Anhanguera, has been here. Then, Martinho Coelho, originally from Santa Luzia (now Santa Cruz), considered the first capital of Goiás, named it Caldas Novas de Santa Cruz. Finally, at the eastern part of Serra de Caldas, the thermal springs of Caldas Novas became famous. A history with its bits of legend, courage and perseverance. It's been told that Martinho Coelho da Siqueira, during one of his famous wild animal hunting, shared the agony of his dogs. The dogs ran ahead of him as if they were touched by an mysterious fire, discovering the Lagoa Quente do Pirapitinga. That was the beginning of the history of the hot springs of Caldas Novas, the history of a village that became a town.
And today, Caldas Novas is the world capital of hot water springs. Waters with temperatures that reaches 51O C, surrounded by pleasant lakes, waterfalls, many kinds of birds and a beautiful view of the mountain ridge. All of it, with the comfort of deluxe hotels, flats or cozy resting, bungalows and camping sites, added to the friendly and welcoming population, an airport and a complete infrastructure. This is the recipe that makes of Caldas Novas, city located 160km from Goiânia, the biggest hotel complex in the Central-Eastern area. The certified therapeutic capacity of the hot water springs can be used by all kinds of tourists. Caldas Novas welcomes tourists all over the year, but during carnival the number becomes much higher, reaching almost 300.000 (Three hundred thousand people) enjoying the carnival in this hot spring area, increasing five times the number of its inhabitants, which is about 65.000 people.
